PVC or aluminium windows: how to choose

Start with the opening and its needs

Choosing between PVC and aluminium does not mean naming one material the winner for every home. A complete window includes the frame, glazing, hardware, seals and installation. The opening size, way it operates, exposure to sun and noise, and the appearance of the façade should guide the discussion before you select a particular system.

PVC has low thermal conductivity, and multi-chamber systems can contribute to insulation. Aluminium allows strong profiles and slim solutions for wide openings; for external windows, check whether the system includes a thermal break. With either material, the outcome depends on the selected profile, glazing, dimensions and installation.

Compare complete windows, not samples

Ask the supplier to identify the manufacturer and system, opening type, dimensions, glazing build-up and declared performance. A PVC window and an aluminium window can have very different configurations. Do not assume that a sample or a product data sheet describes the performance of every window made from that material.

If reducing heat loss is the priority, ask for the thermal transmittance of the complete window and details of the frame-to-wall junction. If noise matters, request the acoustic performance of the proposed assembly and describe whether the sound comes from traffic, voices or another source. Airtightness and installation also affect the result.

Consider use and maintenance

The opening style affects both space and ventilation. A hinged sash needs clearance; a sliding sash keeps the interior space free, while performance depends on the locking system and installation. For panoramic doors, ask about sash weight, threshold, drainage, accessibility and track maintenance.

Ask what care the finish, seals and hardware require. Coastal exposure, dust, rain and frequent use are useful details when selecting finishes and planning checks. Request the manufacturer’s care instructions for the specific system instead of assuming all profiles need identical treatment.

Make a useful comparison

Compare offers for the same opening dimensions, operation, glazing, shutters or solar protection, finish, removal work and installation scope. Record any difference that prevents a direct comparison. A clear recommendation should explain why the proposed system suits the orientation, daily use and design of the property.

In a renovation, the final quality also depends on measurement, preparation of the opening, fixing, sealing and finishing. Ask the quote to state who handles each part, which finishes are included and how operation will be checked at handover. This makes the PVC-versus-aluminium choice a decision about the installed assembly rather than just the material name.
